Sleep Apnea and TMJ

Sleep Apnea

One of the most common dental issues we find in patients today is the loss of sleep or excessive snoring as a result of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a condition caused by a restricted airway that can lead to shortness of breath, loss of sleep, or excessive snoring.

These effects can result from a misaligned jaw, which can then misalign the airway. Most cases of sleep apnea are fixed using a night guard that keeps the airway open, while more severe cases may require assisted breathing machines to help you stay asleep.

TMJ

Sleep Deprivation can cause a whole other host of issues, affecting your heart health, and can dry out your gums, making periodontitis harder to treat. Because sleep apnea is often caused by a misalignment in the jaw, our team is also equipped to handle cases involving the TMJ.

This particular joint is the cause of many jaw related problems, and is a target for treatment of sleep apnea. TMJ issues are often characterized by restricted movement, clicking, locking, or other discomfort when moving the jaw, and are treatable using specific therapies.

“I've always had a very good experience with Dr. Wayne and Dr. Keith over the past 15 years or so. They are also great with the kids, making them feel comfortable and turning the dentist visit into a treat rather than something they don't want to do.”
