TMJ Treatment

TMJ, or the temporomandibular joints, are the joints within your jaw that allow you to speak and eat normally.

Stress on these joints is what causes TMJ dysfunction, which can prevent you from opening your mouth normally, as well as cause facial pain, headaches, tooth loss, and even heart problems if left untreated.

Common Signs of TMJ

At Beavers Dentistry, we can examine your jaw muscles and teeth to determine if you are suffering from a TMJ disorder. However, you can watch out for these common signs and symptoms of TMJ dysfunction:

  • Chronic Headaches
  • Chronic Jaw Pain
  • Shoulder and Neck Pain
  • Clicking Joints
  • Dizziness
  • Worn Down Teeth

Treatments for TMJ

We will work with you to develop a TMJ treatment plan that works for your specific needs. You may only need a custom night guard to help prevent bruxism, or grinding your teeth while you are sleeping. Since TMJ disorders are commonly caused by stress or anxiety, medications such as muscle relaxants, used on a short-term basis, can help relieve jaw pain.

Treatment for TMJ dysfunction also may include an oral splint being placed over your teeth, physical therapy and jaw exercises and behavioral counseling.

“I've always had a very good experience with Dr. Wayne and Dr. Keith over the past 15 years or so. They are also great with the kids, making them feel comfortable and turning the dentist visit into a treat rather than something they don't want to do.”

- Anna M.
